Job Summary

The Specialist Pharmacist role at NHS Jobs offers a dynamic opportunity for a Clinical Pharmacist to advance their career. This position entails a range of responsibilities across clinical services, aseptic dispensing, education, training, and general duties, ensuring comprehensive patient care and efficient pharmacy operations.


Main Responsibilities

Clinical Services:

  • Patient Interaction: Engage with patients to compile accurate drug histories upon hospital admission, ensuring continuity of medication and facilitating discharge.
  • Pharmaceutical Care: Develop, review, and update care plans based on clinical responses and investigation results.
  • Prescription Monitoring: Ensure clinical accuracy and cost-effectiveness in inpatient and discharge prescriptions.
  • Therapeutic Adjustments: Assess patient responses, interpret blood results, and adjust drug doses or advise clinicians accordingly.
  • Consultations and Rounds: Participate in consultant ward rounds and document clinical interventions.

Specialist Services:

  • Counseling and Education: Use interpersonal skills to educate patients about their medicines and administration equipment.
  • Rapid Discharge Service: Provide a rapid discharge service to expedite patient discharges from clinical areas.

Aseptic Dispensing Service:

  • Clinical Checks: Validate prescriptions for aseptic products, ensuring compliance with protocols for chemotherapy and TPN therapy.
  • Aseptic Facility Management: Supervise the aseptic facility’s operation, ensuring safe practices and appropriate staffing.
  • Technical Oversight: Perform technical checks and final releases of aseptic products, ensuring adherence to GMP standards.

Education & Training

  • Mentorship: Provide clinical training, mentoring, and supervision for trainee pharmacists, less experienced pharmacists, and pharmacy technicians.
  • Staff Training: Participate in the training of medical, nursing, and other hospital staff in medicines management.
  • Research and Development: Engage in practice research, clinical audits, and pursue further studies leading to a diploma or MSc in pharmacy practice.
  • Continuing Professional Development: Stay current with pharmaceutical practices through meetings, courses, and conferences.

General Duties

  • Professional Standards: Maintain high work standards and promote the professional image of Pharmacy.
  • Compliance: Ensure adherence to legal requirements related to prescribing, dispensing, and storing pharmaceutical products.
  • Rotational Duties: Participate in a rota for weekend, bank holiday, late-night duties, and on-call responsibilities.
  • Drug Alerts: Act on drug alerts received outside normal working hours as per local procedures.
  • Security: Manage the security of drugs and equipment, holding responsibility for the department’s keys.
