Job Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking pharmacy technician to join our surgery team at the Royal London Hospital. This specialist role focuses on anaesthetic services across the hospital. As part of our commitment to expanding the role of pharmacy technicians in clinical services, we need an independent and proactive professional to take on this exciting new position.
Main Duties of the Job
The Lead Pharmacy Technician will oversee medicines optimization, management, pre-operative services, and clinical pharmacy services within the Surgery Division, including surgical wards and the Adult Critical Care Unit. Responsibilities include:
- Delivering high-quality clinical, professional, and operational pharmacy services.
- Leading a team of rotational Medicines Management Pharmacy Technicians.
- Providing specialist pharmacy services to theatres, recovery, and surgical wards as needed.
- Innovatively developing the role and ensuring a high standard of service in line with professional, ethical, legal, and local guidelines.
- Promoting safe and cost-effective use of medicines to optimize clinical outcomes and improve patient safety.
- Supporting senior pharmacists in leading the surgical pharmacy team.

Job Responsibilities
- Carry out the full range of duties as a Lead Pharmacy Technician in Surgery and Anaesthesia.
- Work autonomously and collaboratively within the peri-operative and wider surgical pharmacy team.
- Uphold high standards of services according to professional, ethical, and legal policies.
Person Specification
Experience
Essential:
- Relevant post-registration experience in a hospital pharmacy department.
- Experience managing or supervising a small team.
- Ability to train staff and provide developmental feedback.
- Proficient in pharmacy labelling, stock control, report creation, dispensing, and accuracy checking.
- Experience in completing audits and improvement plans.
- Familiarity with incident reporting systems like Datix.
- Extensive experience working across medical or surgical wards.
- Experience providing pharmacy services to theatres, anaesthetic, and peri-op areas.
Desirable:
- Management experience, including disciplinary meetings and chairing meetings.
- Leadership experience within a pharmacy service.
- Experience in implementing change.
Knowledge
Essential:
- Understanding of GPhC revalidation requirements.
- Knowledge of medicines management systems and relevant legislation.
- Understanding of stock control systems, drug side effects, and the importance of adherence to SOPs.
- Good grasp of patient safety initiatives.
Desirable:
- Understanding of development opportunities for pharmacy technicians.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.
- Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
- Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) qualification.
- HEE LaSE Medicines Optimisation qualification or equivalent experience (willingness to work towards).
- Practice Supervisor or Train the Trainer qualification (willingness to work towards).
- ILM Level 3 Leadership and Management qualification or equivalent experience (willingness to work towards).
Desirable:
- Further knowledge of development opportunities for pharmacy technicians.
