Job Summary

We are excited to announce an opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Specialist Clinical Pharmacist (Band 8a) to join our dynamic team at The Christie NHS FT. The successful candidate will primarily focus on providing pharmacy services within the gynaecological oncology disease group, overseeing Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies (SACT) for patients with ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancers.

The role involves accountability for delivering specialist clinical pharmacy services, supporting the cancer disease group alongside other specialist gynaecological disease group pharmacists, and actively participating in outpatient clinics for prescribing. You will also contribute to pharmacist-led SACT clinics, including PARP inhibitor clinics within the gynaecological disease group. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, you will be involved in service delivery, new initiatives, and the development/review of drug protocols, including newly NICE-approved SACT.

Our Pharmacy Department collaborates on numerous projects with various research partners and maintains strong links with the University of Manchester. We support our staff in pursuing postgraduate training, research, and secondment opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver and evaluate clinical pharmacy services to gynaecological cancer patients.
  • Supervise and prescribe Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies and supportive treatments for patients with ovarian, endometrial, and cervical cancers.
  • Develop and maintain specialist knowledge of medicines used within the Trust, particularly in the designated cancer disease group.
  • Promote the safe, efficient, and cost-effective use of medicinal resources through education, training, procedures, policies, guidelines, and medicine usage information.
  • Contribute to the broader clinical pharmacy service for patients across all disease groups.

Although based at The Christie Hospital main site, you may be required to work at various locations across the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Network. The Trust supports flexible working arrangements, including potential home working, subject to service commitments.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist clinical pharmacy services to a designated cancer disease group, adhering to departmental, Trust, and national standards, procedures, and policies.
  • Develop and manage outpatient clinical practice or day case settings within the Trust or peripheral locations.
  • Work as an independent prescriber within the designated disease group alongside relevant consultants.
  • Contribute to pharmacist-led clinic streams and service improvements in line with the designated disease group.
  • Audit and evaluate pharmacist-led clinics and prescribing practices for service evaluation and improvement.
  • Develop and maintain drug protocols and treatment guidelines within the clinical pharmacy service and designated cancer disease group.
  • Forecast drug expenditure and identify changes in prescribing practices impacting the drugs budget.
  • Represent the pharmacy service at clinical unit and divisional meetings.
  • Support the development and implementation of electronic prescribing for outpatients and inpatients.

General Duties:

  • Participate in the development and management of training initiatives and competency frameworks.
  • Engage in clinical audit and practice research.
  • Represent pharmacy at relevant meetings and conferences.
  • Provide education and training to pharmacy, medical, and nursing staff.
  • Mentor junior pharmacists and undertake regular appraisals.
  • Participate in clinical pharmacy ward service rota and on-call duties.
  • Maintain a CPD portfolio and identify personal training needs.

Person Specification

Qualifications:

  • Essential: Vocational Masters Degree in Pharmacy, Membership of the General Pharmaceutical Council, Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy.
  • Desirable: Independent prescribing qualification.

Experience:

  • Essential: Post-registration experience in oncology, financial awareness, providing medicines information, prescription screening, multidisciplinary team work.
  • Desirable: Audit work.

Skills:

  • Essential: Excellent communication, presentation, initiative, teamwork, self-motivation, organizational skills, change management, influence and negotiation skills, IT literacy, training abilities.
  • Desirable: Project implementation.

Knowledge:

  • Essential: NHS Plan 2000, Cancer Plan, NICE, funding arrangements, sound clinical knowledge, cost-effective use of medicines, national intrathecal guidance.
  • Desirable: Driving license.
