Job Summary

We seek an enthusiastic and motivated experienced general practice pharmacist dedicated to enhancing their knowledge and skills to improve patient care in general practice.

GL@GP recruits, employs, trains, and supports pharmacists in delivering high-quality patient services across Greater London. We are known for preparing and training pharmacists for general practice roles with experienced practice-based pharmacists (PBPs) and GP trainers.

Main Duties of the Job

Qualifications & Experience Required:

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years post-registration with at least 2 years in General Practice.
  • Certification: Certificate in Non-Medical Prescribing.
  • Clinical Practice: Experience using prescribing qualification in General Practice.
  • Further Education: Completion of NHS Pathway Training for Practice Pharmacists or a Clinical Pharmacy Diploma (for exemption from the NHS pathway training).

Successful candidates will join a team of GL@GP PBPs who meet 2-3 times a month for training and peer support.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

The post holder will be an experienced general practice pharmacist working within their professional boundaries, supported by GreenLight pharmacists and practice GPs. They will take on clinical pharmacy leadership roles, including:

  • Conducting Structured Medication Reviews
  • Managing chronic disease areas
  • Medicines optimization
  • Quality improvement initiatives
  • Overseeing the quality and outcomes framework
  • Leading, training, and coordinating less experienced pharmacy professionals
  • Managing repeat prescribing systems
  • Addressing acute prescription requests and medicines reconciliation
  • Providing clinical medicines advice and addressing public and social care needs

This role is crucial for improving quality of care and operational efficiencies, requiring motivation and passion for delivering excellent service in general practice.

Primary Duties and Areas of Responsibility

  • Patient Facing: Clinical Medication Reviews, care home medication reviews, domiciliary clinical medication review, medicines support.
  • Telephone Support: Medicines support.
  • Practice Staff Support: Providing medicine information.
  • Hospital Admissions: Unplanned admissions management.
  • Documents Management: Repeat prescribing and signposting.
  • Risk Stratification: Service development and information management.
  • Quality Improvement: Medicines quality improvement and safety.
  • Education and Training: Public health education.

Note: Due to COVID-19 risks, patient-facing activities will largely be managed remotely via phone or video link.


Required Skills and Attributes

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Masters degree in pharmacy (MPharm) or equivalent.
  • Training: Clinical Pharmacy Diploma or equivalent training (e.g., NHS Pathway training for PBPs).
  • Certification: Independent prescriber.

Essential Experience

  • General Practice: Working as a pharmacist full-time (or equivalent) for over 2 years.
  • Training: Experience in teaching, clinical supervision, mentoring, and coaching.
  • Leadership: Leading healthcare professionals, particularly pharmacists.
  • Management: Managing self and others to achieve goals and targets.

Desirable Experience

  • Diverse Settings: Working across various pharmacy settings.
  • Multidisciplinary Teams: Leading and developing clinical teams.

Essential Registration

  • Professional Registration: Mandatory registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
