Summary The Senior Clinical Pharmacist QE is responsible for delivering, developing, and evaluating clinical pharmacy services within the named Trust directorate. This role is integral in ensuring high-quality patient care and supporting the pharmacy team to achieve the objectives set by the Principal Pharmacist, Clinical Services, and Lead Pharmacists. The position also aims to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience required to progress to a lead clinical pharmacist role.

Job Purpose

To provide comprehensive clinical pharmacy services to the named Trust directorate. This includes promoting safe, clinically effective, and cost-effective prescribing and use of medicines. The Senior Clinical Pharmacist QE will act as a key team member, working closely with pharmacy and clinical staff, and will be responsible for improving medicine management and patient care quality.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Accountability

  • Accountable to: Director of Pharmacy Clinical Services Manager
  • Responsible to: Lead Pharmacist (dependent on rotation)
  • Supervises: Junior pharmacists, trainee pharmacists, ward-based pharmacy technicians, and undergraduate pharmacy students

Liaison

  • Collaborate with all pharmacy staff
  • Coordinate with clinical staff on wards and specialist outpatient areas
  • Engage with medical and nursing staff across all directorates
  • Interact with other healthcare professionals

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Develop and provide clinical pharmacy services to ensure safe and effective medicine use.
  • Deputize for Lead Pharmacist(s) in their absence.
  • Support ward-based technicians in enhancing medicine management.
  • Assist in creating and updating local clinical guidelines.
  • Participate in clinical and departmental audits, measure adherence to guidelines, and provide feedback to staff.
  • Engage in ward rounds to proactively address drug-related issues.
  • Adhere to legal, ethical, professional, and employer codes of conduct.

Education and Training

  • Serve as a tutor and educational facilitator for the Postgraduate Diploma in General Pharmacy Practice.
  • Support junior and trainee pharmacists during their rotations, offering information, informal teaching, and competency assessments.
  • Conduct teaching and training sessions on pharmacy-related topics for pharmacy, ward, and clinical staff.
